Thirlmere

Thirlmere is yet another reservoir serving the city of Manchester. There was a local outcry when the area was purchased in the late 19th Century. Soon afterwards, the most northern of the two existing lakes was damned, forcing up the water level and flooding the village which once stood between the two smaller lakes, effectively making them into one larger expanse of water.

There are some splendid views from the prettier west side of the lake. These include the dramatic sight of Helvellyn, one of the most popular peaks with ramblers and climbers in the area.
