Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin amongst other notable people.
Ruskin bought the house for it's spectacular views over Coniston and lived there from the age of 52 until his death at 80.
After his death the house was inherited by the Severn family. In Ruskin's will it requested that Brantwood should be open to the public for 30 days a year. This was not honoured and many of the best paintings were sold by the family.
