Crummock Water

Cummock WaterCrummock Water is the largest lake in the Buttermere Valley. It is three and a half miles long and around three quarters of a mile in width. The dramatic fell of Melbreak Peak overlooks the lake. Opposite to the fell is an attractive headland, Rannerdale Knott.

There is a good footpath below Melbreak and it is possible to climb up by Scale Beck, which flows into the lake. About a mile up is Scale Force, the highest waterfall in England with a drop of 120 feet. One pleasant approach to Crummock Water is through Long How Wood from the Cockermouth Road. The path starts close to the Bridge Inn.
